About Gir National Park
Gir National Park, located in Junagadh, Gujarat, is the only natural habitat of the Asiatic Lion in the world. Established in 1965, the park covers around 1,400 sq km including Gir Wildlife Sanctuary.
The park is a global conservation success story, where the Asiatic Lion population has grown steadily. Apart from lions, Gir is also home to leopards, antelopes, marsh crocodiles, and a wide variety of birds.

Gir offers a unique wildlife experience with:
Asiatic Lions (exclusive to Gir, ~600+ lions)
Leopards, Hyenas, Jackals, Jungle Cats
Deer species: Sambar, Chital, Chinkara
Four-horned Antelope & Blue Bull (Nilgai)
Marsh Crocodiles at Kamleshwar Dam
Over 300 bird species – including Paradise Flycatchers, Crested Serpent Eagles, and Vultures.
Safari Zones in Gir
There are two main safari experiences:
Gir Jungle Safari (Gir National Park)
Open jeep safari inside the core forest area
Divided into multiple routes (allocated randomly at entry)
Devalia Safari Park (Gir Interpretation Zone)
Smaller fenced area, easier lion sightings
Good for visitors with less time
Best Time to Visit
- October to June → Park open for visitors
- December to March → Pleasant weather, great for sightseeing
- April to June → Hot but best for lion sightings
- Monsoon (July – September) → Park remains closed
Safari Timings
Morning Safari: 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM
Mid-Morning Safari: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Afternoon Safari: 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
